George Skouras |
The world of wine acknowledges and praises each vintage from the Peloponnese and in particular the stylish and individualistic wines of George Skouras. In less than fifteen years his wines have evolved into modern Greek classics. A Dijon graduate, Skouras was born in Argos, a city that has been inhabited for over 3.000 years. In 1986 he established his winery at Pyrghela, a small village just outside Argos.
In 1988 Skouras launched his pioneering Megas Oenos. Pioneering, because he was the first to blend the native Aghiorghitiko with Cabernet Sauvignon producing illustrious results.

The Skouras winery |
In 1966 he built a modest winery at Gymno, a tiny vineyard commune inside the Nemea Appellation. Today Domaine Skouras is at the forefront of Greek estates, full of momentum and with a sharp focus on the future. Increased demand, both at home and abroad, for Skouras’s terroir-driven estate bottled wines has prompted the building of a new, ultramodern winery near Argos. Construction is under way and it will also house a visitors reception area.

The vineyards in Gymno |
The Peloponnese, rich in ancient ruins from its glorious past, has been cultivated with vineyards for many centuries. The northeastern Peloponnese, home to Mycenae and Epidaurus, has been blessed with ideal growing conditions for vineyards.

Indigenous grape varieties in Nemea, Argolida, Arcadia and Mantinia include the white varieties, Roditis, Sklava, Moschofilero and the red Aghiorghitiko. International varieties such as Chardonnay, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are also cultivated and display strong terroir. Domaine Skouras sources grapes from its own vineyards and from dedicated grape growers in the region.
