Peloponnese - Oenoforos

The winemakers

Angelos Rouvalis

Angelos Rouvalis

Oenoforos was established in 1990 by Angelos Rouvalis, a Bordeaux-trained winemaker, recognized internationally as a pioneer in the renaissance that has taken place in the Greek wine industry in recent years. In 1994 Yannis Karabatsos, an agricultural engineer and expert in Greek viticulture, joined Oenoforos further strengthening the operations. Together with their associates who work in the vineyards and the winery they combine science, technology and an intense passion for the art of winemaking. Their work has also benefited the entire winemaking region of Aegialeia.

The Winery

The Oenoforos winery

The Oenoforos winery consists of five levels on the slopes of Aigialeia in the village of Selinous. It combines monastic simplicity with state-of-the-art technology. Oenoforos preserves the traditional values of winemaking, for example, by utilizing gravity in order to provide a natural flow of the must while sterile conditions are assured. Also, the serenity and northern exposure of its location are very important components in the wine creation process. It is within these peaceful surroundings that their wine is allowed to ferment and age in oak barrels in their underground cellars or in stainless steel vats, always under the watchful eye of the Oenoforos team.

The mountainous slopes of Aegion are spread throughout the northern region of the Peloponnese at an altitude of 500-850m above sea level. The vineyards benefit from their northern exposure and their proximity to the Gulf of Corinth and are protected from the hot summer winds thanks to the mountains of the northern Peloponnese. The soils have an interesting variety ranging from argilo-calcaire to sandy.

The grapes that are cultivated include the indigenous Rhoditis and Lagorthi and the international Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, supplemented by the local winegrowers who also cooperate with Oenoforos. The most important indigenous grape cultivated in this area is Rhoditis. Rhoditis produces the elegant wine called "Asprolithi" with an Appellation of Origin of Superior Quality Patra. Oenoforos also produces several excellent Regional Wines from the slopes of Aegio with the perfect combinations of local indigenous and international grapes.

Historical region

The region surrounding Oenoforos winery contains many important Byzantine monasteries including Mega Spilaio, Taxiarchon and Makelarias, most of which have enjoyed a long and interesting winemaking tradition as well. In this same region the best black raisin in the world has been produced for many years.

Many important archeological discoveries have taken place in this same region especially in the ancient town of Eliki, buried together with all of its inhabitants in 373 BC from a terrible earthquake and tidal wave. Located here is also the ancient theater of Aegira and an interesting archeological and folk museums in the town of Aegio.

Here you will experience the breathtaking natural beauty of the Cave of the Lakes (Spilaio Limnon), the historical city of Kalavrita and Lake Tsivlou, which overlooks the sea town of Akrata. In Pagkratio village, very close to Kalavrita, a visitor can see probably the oldest grapevine in the world. This huge ancient grape vine is known as the Pafsanias Grapevine after the famous traveler who was the first to mention it in his memoirs in the 2nd century AD. It is also interesting to note that the slopes of Aegialia form the center of the triangle of Ancient Delfi, Olympia and Epidavros.
